TRUST TAX RETURNS
Form 709 Gift Tax
Return Preparation
Giving money or property to family members or other individuals can create federal tax reporting responsibilities. Some gifts must be reported to the IRS even when no gift tax is owed.
At David I Levine Bookkeeping & Tax Services, I provide Form 709 gift tax return preparation to help individuals understand their filing obligations and report qualifying transfers.
REQUIREMENTS
Understanding IRS Form 709 Requirements
IRS Form 709 is used to report certain gifts of money or property, as well as applicable generation-skipping transfers.
A filing requirement may arise when gifts to one recipient exceed the annual exclusion for the tax year. Other transfers may require reporting regardless of whether they exceed that amount.
The annual exclusion and lifetime gift and estate tax exclusion serve different purposes. The annual exclusion generally allows qualifying gifts up to a specified amount per recipient without reducing the donor's lifetime exclusion.
Gifts above the annual exclusion do not automatically result in tax owed. The donor's remaining lifetime exclusion may cover the taxable amount.
I review the nature and value of your gifts to help determine which reporting rules apply.
OUR SERVICES
What's Included in My Gift Tax Preparation Services?
Gift Reporting and Documentation
Reportable gifts may involve cash, real estate, investments, business interests, or other property. I review transfer records, recipient information, and available valuations to prepare the relevant Form 709 reporting. Certain property transfers may require additional supporting documents.
Annual Gift Tax Exclusion
The IRS establishes an annual exclusion amount that can change from year to year. I apply the exclusion relevant to the tax year and consider whether special rules affect particular gifts, including transfers of future interests.
Lifetime Gift Tax Exemption
Taxable gifts may reduce the donor's available lifetime gift and estate tax exclusion. I review relevant prior gift tax returns when available and account for earlier taxable gifts as required for Form 709 preparation.
Gift Splitting Between Spouses
Married couples may elect to treat qualifying gifts as made equally by both spouses, subject to IRS rules. Gift splitting can require Form 709 filing even when no immediate gift tax is owed. I help review the relevant reporting information and election requirements.

THE VALUE
Why Accurate Gift Tax Reporting Matters
Gift tax returns can affect future estate tax calculations, making consistent reporting important.
For example, a gift of privately held business interests may require a professional valuation. Transfers involving trusts or restrictions on property ownership may also involve special rules.
Clear records help establish what was transferred, when the gift occurred, and how its value was determined. I focus on identifying these details before preparing the return and explaining any outstanding questions.
